Cefalù stands at the foot of a rocky headland and is one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. It grew up around the Duomo and from there spread into a grid of narrow, winding alleys running down towards the sea.
The old village, the medieval wash-house, the flower-filled alleys and the seafront restaurants make up a centre covered entirely on foot: a rare condition, and the reason Cefalù works well with groups. Around it lie the Madonie, the Nebrodi and the Turchina coast, that is three different environments a short distance from the village.
The village is toured on foot, while the Madonie, the Nebrodi and the coast each require their own excursion: it is a base that opens onto three different environments and that supports both a half day and a multi-day programme. What weighs most here is incentive travel and outdoor group activities, but the same base takes in corporate events and MICE, weddings, family groups and roots tourism itineraries.
The Duomo of Cefalù and the Temple of Diana
The village formed around the Duomo, and that is still the point where the guided visit begins. The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the route then continues towards the Temple of Diana, on the headland that closes off the built-up area.
The close is a short food stop: the granita tasting at a kiosk set up with the Sicilian cart.
Castelbuono and the Madonie Park
Castelbuono is visited as a historical and cultural itinerary: the castle of the Ventimiglia family, the church, the clock tower. The town sits at the foot of the Madonie, where the ash trees that yield manna grow, and the stop at a workshop includes a tasting of filled panettone, dry pastries and creams.
In the full-day version the itinerary adds a guide and a trek in the Madonie Park, among oaks and giant hollies.
Sunset jeeps towards the Nebrodi Park
The excursion is built around the sunset. The climb towards the Nebrodi Park is made in 4x4 off-road vehicles along off-road tracks, and the stop is at a chalet in the woods, with a barbecue.
The return is made at night, with the chance of spotting wild animals along the way.
Boat charters along the Turchina coast
Departure is from Cefalù and the boat excursion follows the Turchina coast, with stops in the coves and snorkelling. Arrival is at the fishing village of Castel di Tusa: from there it is a ten-minute walk to the trattoria where local products are tasted.
